The gist of the story is that The Persistence is the name of the space vessel the story is set on, where something has gone horribly awry with the cloning tools on-board resulting in a reborn you and a whole lot of not-so-well-reborn inhabitants out to send you back into a space cold death. Guided by the only other onboard survivor via a radio signal, your goal is getting the ship back under control and moving home while avoiding/eliminating the creepy crawlies awaiting around every corner.
What this results in is a first-person stealth/horror romp as you use the few tools you're afforded to sense out enemies, stealth kill what you can, forage what are effectively various upgrade currencies and use them to improve your odds of survival. The main complaint I and many reviewers will probably slap the game with is that your movement speed is definitely slow. This is a deliberate design choice the developers made to keep the game tense but combat is also a slow clunky affair because it, and that's what drives the tension higher. Should you be spotted, more often than not you're going to go into a slap fest with the enemy unless you manage to stun them with your shield blocking action (at which point often turns them around and affords you an instant kill on them). So the stealth feels pretty decent, but when your cover's blown and combat is on the horizon, you feel the change in pace and realize your speed in this game.
Since this has roguelite elements you can guess the basics of how things will go when you die (you very likely will.) After your newly replicated clone is printed and you return to the deck you were at you'll need to scrap together new loose items like grenades or handguns, so on. These are the main things you lose on each death, but among several collected currencies you'll be upgrading your health, your shield regen (for the deflecting ability), or using them to print out more items instead of needing to find them out in the randomized rooms and loot. These currencies and any actual upgrading they do persist from clone to clone and you'll amass a reasonable amount of each per attempt you make through the game's decks.
As for the Switch port, I can happily say it's generally pretty solid. The game seems to hold a clear resolution docked, handheld mode looks a bit below native resolution but the frame rate seems to hold a consistent 30fps on either side. The graphics looks pretty good among Switch titles which normally see effects like reflections cut or nasty amounts of dynamic resolution deployment. Sadly there's no gyro camera controls but I made off just fine without them. The game is all on cartridge, though there has been some post-print patch work done which comes in at about 104mb, likely to improve performance more.
Overall, while I feel that there could've somehow been more to the overall experience (particularly the story), I paid $20 for a hard copy not being sure if this game would deliver much. What I walked away with was a lot of little ideas that may not have seemed impressive on their own, but together made for a hidden gem in the Switch's ever expansive library. Alien Isolation may hold the crown when it comes to space stealth/terror in this library, but The Persistence isn't a triple A project on that caliber. What it accomplishes in its own space and on its own merits make it more than worthy of that $20.
